| Development in the watershed around Mountain Island Lake, a reservoir that serves 1/8 of North Carolina's population, was posing a threat to water quality. Residents and officials of Mecklenburg, Gaston, and Lincoln counties realized that remediation of this water source would be extremely costly and would inconvenience many people should it become contaminated. In order to protect this water resource, a broad coalition of local government offices and NGOs came together with a goal of protecting the critical areas of land around Mountain Island Lake. This source water protection project is ongoing, but to date 2,361 acres of the lake's watershed have been protected, including 9 miles of shoreline | |||
