When citizens of western North Carolina learned that a large tract of private land bordering South Mountains State Park had been sold to an out-of-state timber company, concerns were voiced that large-scale timber harvesting and development in this area could create water quality problems. Additionally, the NC Natural Heritage Trust Fund had identified this tract as significant land for wildlife. The citizens took action and formed a land trust that raised $14 million through grassroots action to purchase this land. The 18,000 acres of land were placed under the jurisdiction of the Wildlife Resources Commission and are now managed as public wildlife land.
